Inspired by Nature

  • This garden was designed for ourselves, with the ambition to create a space that felt immersive, playful, and restorative. One of the key challenges was working with the irregular shape of the plot, which—as highlighted in an episode of Gardeners’ World—posed a unique design test.

  • The garden wraps around a studio space, with an unusually shaped boundary that lacks a traditional layout. Despite its limitations, the site offered opportunities for varied zones and sightlines. Its orientation provides sunny areas throughout the day, with enough space to accommodate both productive planting and family leisure.

  • A wildlife pond and hardwood deck were positioned to create a striking view from the garden studio, anchoring the space visually while offering a tranquil focal point. Separate seating areas were designed for different times of day: a secluded morning coffee spot nestled into planting, and a larger sun-drenched terrace ideal for evening dining and BBQs.

A generous, species-rich organic lawn not only allows space for family games but also supports pollinators and ground-feeding birds with its rich tapestry of flowering plants. Curving paths guide visitors through the garden, fostering a sense of journey and rhythm. Planting beds curve gently around the lawn like a soft embrace, and the overall use of sweeping, organic forms helps mask the irregular boundaries of the plot, turning a design constraint into a defining feature.
